Let's Learn Some Knowledge About Rolex Watches

Posted by Goldie at October 16. 2009

Rolex is one of the most renowned brand names across the globe. The company prides itself on having "an obsession with perfection" and manufactures about 2,000 watches every day. A Rolex Watches  is also considered a status symbol, and prestigious people are often seen wearing these watches. Now let's learn some knowledge about Rolex watches.

First, let's learn about the history of Rolex:

The earliest existence of the company was in 1905, by the name of W&D--two people named Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis. These people did not make complete watches at that time. They only imported Hermann Aegler's Swiss movements to England. Then they placed them in quality cases and sold them to jewelers, who sold the watches with their own names. "W&D" was written inside the case back.

The trademark name of "Rolex" was registered in 1908, and its first office was in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. On November 15, 1915, "Rolex" was selected as the company name. Why the name was selected is not known, although this name is easily pronounceable in any language.

Types

Rolex offers three watch lines: Oyster Perpetual, Professional and Cellini. The Cellini line is the Rolex's line of high class and "dressy" watches, while it uses the "Tudor" brand name for comparatively less expensive watches. Sales of this brand in America were discontinued in 2004.

Features

A prominent feature of a Rolex Watches the perpetual motion. This means that the minute hand on the watch is constantly moving in a sweeping motion around the face of the clock. Other features of this high-performance brand include stainless steel or gold bands, ceramic bezels and a parachrom hairspring.

Significance

Rolex has been the greatest inventor in the history of watches. It gets the credit for the making first waterproof watch case, the first wristwatch with a date on the dial, the first watch to show two time zones at once and the first watchmakers to earn chronometer certification for a wristwatch. Rolex also created the first self-winding watch in 1928, which was powered by an internal mechanism that used the movement of the wearer's arm.

Misconceptions

Although many think that Rolex is a publicly traded company or owned by a larger corporation, the company is still owned by a private trust. There are no shares in the market for the company. In addition, Rolex is very philanthropic. Some amount of the company's income each year goes to charity because in 1944, Wilsdorf left all his Rolex shares for this purpose. He had established a charity foundation called the Hans Wildorf Foundation.
